Straight Man Funny Guy

Frank Benson (1976, Norfolk, Virginia) is an artist primarily known as a sculptor of 21st century figures that marry 3d technologies to traditional material engagements. But Benson's work began back in the late 1990's with the artist wielding a large format camera to picture arrangements, ephemeral states, and willful deformations of everyday things. These first subjects—captured in rapturous, cinematic light—carry the seeds of Benson's work to come and stand out in their specific humor and uncanny temporality. In Zolo Zine No 1 we have collected these pictures, along with some subsequent ones, to bring into focus the photographer latent beneath the sculptor. There is also a short text by photographer Lucas Balock on his encounters with these works.
